Know the Supply Before Installation

Using a fixture with the wrong voltage can damage it immediately, trip a circuit breaker, or create a fire hazard. This guide explains the two global power systems, shows country-specific values, and helps you read the electrical label on a fixture or LED driver.

Section 01 - The Two World Voltage Systems

Most Countries Use One of Two Systems

Identifying the local voltage and frequency is the most important step before purchasing or installing an electrical fixture.

The core voltage rule

North America and a few other regions use roughly 120V / 60Hz. Most of the world uses 220-240V / 50Hz. A device must support the local voltage or use a correctly sized transformer.

US & Canada

The United States and Canada use standardized 120V / 60Hz household systems. Type A and Type B plugs are standard, and most household lighting circuits are rated 15 or 20 amps.

Moving a 120V device to Europe?

A plug adapter changes only the pin shape. A 120V-only device also needs a step-down transformer before it can safely use a European 230V socket. A device marked "100-240V" normally needs only the correct plug adapter.

How to use this reference

Find the destination country, confirm the voltage and frequency, then check the product input label. Compatibility assumes the fixture or driver is marked within the local range. Japan requires individual confirmation because its 100V supply is below the standard 110-240V rating.

Section 03 - How to Read Your Device Label

Thirty Seconds Can Prevent Damage

Look on the back, underside, ceiling canopy, LED driver, or power supply. The input line tells you which voltage and frequency the device accepts.

The key input range

If the input label reads "100-240V, 50/60Hz," the device is dual-voltage and accepts standard electrical systems worldwide. A single rating such as "120V only" means a converter is required outside that device's home voltage system.

Section 04 - Dual-Voltage Devices & Converters

When You Need a Transformer

Modern LED drivers and many electronic power supplies accept a wide input range. Single-voltage devices require conversion when moved to the other global voltage system.

Requires a step-down transformer when connected to a 220-240V supply. Size the transformer above the device wattage.

Europe / World

Requires a step-up transformer for North American 120V circuits and separate confirmation for Japan's 100V supply.

Allow extra transformer capacity

Choose a reputable transformer rated to at least twice the device wattage. For example, a 60W fixture should use a transformer rated at 120W or more. This reduces heat and avoids continuous operation at maximum capacity.

A plug adapter may still be required

Dual-voltage means the electrical input is compatible. It does not make one plug shape fit every socket. A US Type A plug still needs an adapter for a UK Type G socket.

Are Liora Light fixtures compatible with both 120V and 230V?
Fixtures configured for AC 110-240V, 50/60Hz accept both North American 120V and common international 220-240V systems without a voltage converter. Always confirm the rating on the specific product page and supplied driver.
What is the difference between 50Hz and 60Hz?
The number describes how often alternating current changes direction each second. Modern LED drivers marked 50/60Hz work on both systems. Older dimmers, clocks, transformers, and motor-driven products can be frequency-sensitive.
I am ordering from the US but shipping to the UK. What should I do?
Use the UK delivery address at checkout so the order can be prepared for the destination. The 110-240V fixture input is compatible, but the bulb base, plug, canopy, or driver configuration may differ by region. Contact support if the shipping and installation countries are different.
Can I use a Liora Light fixture in Japan?

What happens if a 120V fixture is connected to 230V?
A 120V-only device may fail immediately because its components receive nearly twice their rated voltage. It can overheat, burn out, trip protection devices, or create a fire risk. Disconnect power and use a suitable converter or correctly rated fixture.
Does a dual-voltage device need a voltage converter?
No. A device labeled "100-240V, 50/60Hz" accepts standard global voltage systems. It may still need a physical plug adapter, regional canopy, or suitable terminal connection for the local socket and wiring standard.
