Six Simple Tools for a Clean Install

Most plug-in fixtures can be installed with basic household tools. The exact hardware depends on wall type, fixture weight, and whether you are mounting into a stud, joist, masonry, or drywall.

Section 03 - Step-by-Step Installation

Install the Fixture in Seven Steps

These steps apply to most plug-in wall lamps and swag pendant fixtures. Always follow the product-specific instruction sheet included in the package.

Choose Your Location

Select the wall or ceiling position and confirm the cord can reach a standard outlet. For sconces, a common center height is 60-66 inches from the floor. For bedside reading, place the center around seated shoulder height, usually 48-52 inches.

Placement tip: Mark the outlet, cord path, furniture edges, and switch reach before drilling. This makes the fixture look intentional rather than temporary.

Mark Mounting Points

Hold the mounting plate, hook, or canopy in place. Lightly mark screw holes with a pencil, then verify alignment with a spirit level. For ceiling installation, locate the joist before marking.

Drill and Insert Anchors

If marks land on a stud or joist, drill pilot holes directly. If mounting into drywall between studs, drill anchor holes and tap anchors flush with the surface.

Anchor rule: Use anchors rated for at least 2x the fixture weight. Many plug-in sconces weigh roughly 0.8-2.5 kg, but stone, ceramic, glass, or oversized shades may require stronger anchors.

Attach the Mounting Plate

Align the plate or hook with the anchor holes and tighten the screws until secure. Avoid over-tightening, which can damage drywall or deform the mounting plate.

Attach the Fixture Body

For wall lamps, hook or slide the fixture onto the mounted plate. For pendant lights, thread the cord through the canopy, secure the cord, and install the shade or globe. Tighten all locking nuts and set screws before releasing the fixture.

Route and Conceal the Cord

Guide the cord toward the nearest outlet using cord clips, cable channels, or a deliberate decorative drape. Keep cords away from doorways, rugs, chair legs, and walking paths.

Install the Bulb and Plug In

Install the recommended bulb according to the fixture label, usually E26 for North America. Plug into a grounded outlet, switch on, and confirm the light works correctly.
