Before You Connect

Electrical systems vary by plug shape, voltage, frequency, and grounding method. A travel adapter can make a plug fit, but it cannot make an incompatible voltage safe. Verify both the power rating and socket type before installing or using any fixture.

Section 01 - Plug Types by Region

Eight Common Plug Standards

Fifteen plug types are used worldwide, designated Type A through Type O. The eight types below cover the majority of destinations served by Liora Light, including North America, Europe, the United Kingdom, Australia, China, India, and Japan.

A Ungrounded

USA, Canada, Mexico, Japan

Two flat parallel pins. This is the most common ungrounded plug in North America.

Two flat pins plus one round grounding pin. Commonly used alongside Type A.

Section 02 - Voltage & Frequency Standards

Voltage Is the Critical Check

A 220-240V product connected to 120V may operate dimly or not at all. A 120V-only product connected to 220-240V can be permanently damaged and may create a fire risk. Always compare the fixture label with the local power supply.

North America is the main exception

North America generally uses 120V / 60Hz, while most other regions use 220-240V / 50Hz. A plug adapter does not resolve this voltage difference.

Most modern LED drivers and electronic transformers support both 50Hz and 60Hz. Some older clocks, motors, and dimmable fittings can be frequency-sensitive.

Voltage mismatch is the primary compatibility hazard. Check the rated input on the fixture, driver, or power supply before connecting.

Section 03 - Adapting Between Countries

Adapter or Voltage Converter?

International compatibility has two separate parts: making the plug fit the socket and making the voltage safe for the device. These require different equipment.

Plug Adapter - Shape Only
Physical Fit

Changes the plug shape so it fits another socket standard. It does not alter voltage or frequency. Use it only when the device voltage already matches the local supply.

Voltage Converter - Power Conversion
Electrical Match

A step-up or step-down transformer converts one voltage to another. It is required when a single-voltage device moves between 120V and 220-240V regions.

Do not confuse physical fit with electrical compatibility

An adapter may let a 120V-only device plug into a 230V socket, but the device will still receive 230V and may fail or overheat. Check the device label first.

Read the input rating

A label reading "100-240V, 50/60Hz" confirms dual-voltage operation, so only the correct plug adapter is needed. A label reading only "120V" or "230V" means a converter is required in the other voltage region.

What You Need, Route by Route

Use these examples to identify whether a common international move requires an adapter, a voltage converter, or both.

Type A/B to C/E/F

US / Canada to Europe

The plug changes and the supply rises from 120V to 230V. A dual-voltage device needs only an adapter; a 120V-only device also needs a step-up converter.

US / Canada to UK

The socket shape and voltage both change. A device rated 100-240V requires a Type G adapter only.

Type C/E/F to G

Europe to UK

Both regions use approximately 230V / 50Hz, so there is no voltage conversion. Only the physical plug shape changes.

Type I to A/B

Australia to US / Canada

The supply drops from about 230V to 120V. A 230V-only device needs a step-down converter in addition to the plug adapter.

Europe to Australia

The voltage range is compatible at roughly 230V / 50Hz. A Type I plug adapter solves the physical difference.

US / Canada to Japan

The plug is similar, but Japan uses 100V. Many 120V devices may run dimly or underperform, so verify the input rating.

Section 05 - Dual-Voltage Devices

One Rating That Travels Well

Many phones, laptops, LED drivers, and electronic power supplies accept both major voltage systems. Their label will show a range rather than a single voltage.

100-240V

Works worldwide within the stated frequency range. You normally need only the correct plug adapter or regional canopy.

North America Only
120V

Requires a step-down transformer when connected to a 220-240V supply in Europe, Australia, the UK, or China.

Europe / World
230V

Requires a step-up transformer for use on a 120V North American circuit. Japan's 100V supply also needs separate confirmation.

Converter capacity matters

When voltage conversion is required, use a reputable transformer rated above the connected load. A practical margin is approximately twice the device wattage, which reduces heat and avoids continuous operation at the transformer's limit.

Global Plug Guide FAQ

Do I need a voltage converter for a Liora Light fixture in Europe?
Fixtures rated AC 110-240V are compatible with both North American and European voltage systems and do not need a voltage converter. You may still need the correct regional plug, canopy, or terminal connection. Confirm the rating on the product page and driver label.
What is the difference between a plug adapter and a voltage converter?
A plug adapter changes only the physical pin shape. A voltage converter or transformer changes the electrical voltage, such as 230V to 120V or 120V to 230V. An adapter alone never corrects a voltage mismatch.
Which bulb base will my Liora Light fixture include?
North American configurations commonly use E12 sockets, while many European and Australian configurations use G9 sockets. The actual base depends on the fixture and selected regional configuration. Contact Liora Light before ordering if a project needs a particular base.
Can I use a Type A plug in a Type C socket?
Not directly. The pins are physically different, so a Type A to Type C adapter is needed. Before connecting, verify that the device also accepts the local 220-240V supply. A 120V-only device can be damaged even when an adapter makes it fit.
Does 50Hz versus 60Hz affect lighting fixtures?
Most modern LED drivers support both frequencies when their input label states 50/60Hz. Older transformers, motors, and some dimming systems may be frequency-sensitive. Always follow the rating printed on the actual driver or fixture.
Is any special setup required for Japan?
