Lighting Size & Installation Guide
Lighting Size & Installation Guide
Choosing the right fixture is about proportion, clearance, and the way each room is used. This guide covers designer sizing formulas, ceiling-height rules, room-by-room placement, and bestselling Liora Light fixtures.
Start With Scale, Then Refine by Room
Lighting is both functional and architectural. A fixture that is too small disappears; one that is too large overwhelms the room. Use the formulas below to establish a professional baseline, then adjust for ceiling height, furniture scale, and the mood you want to create.
How to Calculate the Right Fixture Size
Three formulas cover most lighting decisions: fixture diameter, fixture height, and hanging height above a surface.
1. Fixture Diameter
This works for chandeliers, pendants, flush mounts, semi-flush mounts, and many ceiling lights.
2. Fixture Height
3. Hanging Height Above a Surface
4. Multiple Pendants
For a long table or island, size each pendant relative to the surface below it and leave clear space at both ends.
Ceiling Height Considerations
Ceiling height determines whether a fixture should sit close to the ceiling, hang as a pendant, or become a dramatic vertical statement.
| Ceiling Height | Fixture Type | Minimum Clearance | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 ft | Flush / semi-flush | 7 ft | Use short canopies and low-profile shades. |
| 9-10 ft | Pendant / chandelier | 7 ft | Most residential fixtures are designed for this range. |
| 10-12 ft | Larger chandeliers | 7.5 ft | Scale diameter and height up slightly. |
| 12 ft + | Oversized / cluster | 8 ft | Use vertical drop to make the space feel balanced. |
Fixture Rules for Every Room
Each room uses light differently. Use these rules to match fixture scale, placement, and installation height to the room's function.
Living Room
Layer ambient overhead lighting with floor lamps, table lamps, and wall sconces.
| Room Size | Recommended Diameter | Floor Clearance |
|---|---|---|
| Under 150 sq ft | 14-22" | Min 7 ft |
| 150-250 sq ft | 22-28" | Min 7 ft |
| 250-400 sq ft | 28-36" | Min 7.5 ft |
| 400+ sq ft / open plan | 36-48" or cluster | Min 8 ft |
Dining Room
The chandelier should complement the table without overwhelming diners.
| Table Size | Single Fixture | Two Fixtures |
|---|---|---|
| 36" round / 4-seat | 16-22" | 10-14" each |
| 48-60" rectangular | 22-28" | 14-18" each |
| 72-84" rectangular | 28-36" or two | 18-24" each |
| 96"+ farmhouse table | Use 2-3 pendants | 20-28" each |
Kitchen
Kitchen lighting should support task visibility first, then style.
| Island Length | Pendants | Each Diameter | Hang Height |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 48" | 1 | 10-16" | 28-34" above counter |
| 48-72" | 2 | 10-14" | 28-34" |
| 72-96" | 2-3 | 10-16" | 28-36" |
| 96"+ | 3 or 1 linear | 12-18" / 48-72" linear | 30-36" |
Bedroom
Use warm, layered lighting with a central fixture and focused bedside light.
| Use Case | Fixture Diameter | Height / Placement |
|---|---|---|
| Central ceiling pendant | Room formula | Min 7 ft from floor |
| Bedside pendant | 8-14" | 48-60" from floor |
| Above-bed decorative pendant | 16-24" | 72-84" from floor |
| Bedside table lamp | See bedside section | Eye-level when seated |
Bathroom
Focus on balanced vanity lighting and damp-location safety.
| Fixture Type | Placement | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Vanity sconces | 65-70" from floor | Best for face lighting beside mirror. |
| Overhead vanity bar | 24" above mirror top | Use where side sconces do not fit. |
| Ceiling flush mount | Centered | Ambient layer; combine with vanity light. |
| Shower / wet zone | Code-specific | Use IP-rated recessed lights only. |
Entryway & Hallway
The entry fixture sets the tone for the home. Scale up in double-height spaces.
| Ceiling Height | Fixture Diameter | Drop / Cord Length |
|---|---|---|
| 8-9 ft | 12-20" | Short, 18-24" |
| 10-12 ft | 18-28" | Medium, 30-42" |
| 14-20 ft | 24-40" | Long, 48-96"+ |
Home Office
Prevent screen glare while keeping the workspace bright enough for focus.
| Fixture Type | Use | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Ceiling flush / semi-flush | Ambient | Diffuse shades reduce screen glare. |
| Desk lamp | Task | Position opposite your writing hand. |
| Track lighting | Larger offices | Aim at walls or work surfaces, away from screens. |
| Floor lamp | Reading corner | Torchiere styles bounce soft light upward. |
Bedside Lamps Should Meet Eye Level
A lamp that is too tall throws light into your eyes; a lamp that is too short hides behind pillows.
