FAQ

Which of the three sizes should I choose?

A common rule for a table is to pick a fixture at least 12″ narrower than the table: about 30″ wide or larger for the 17.7″ size, 36″ for the 23.6″ size, and 44″ for the 31.5″ size. The two larger sizes are the same height, 17.7″, so the 31.5″ one is much wider and flatter, and suits a large table or a big room.

What does the shell-shaped glass look like lit?

The ribs on each panel fan out like the lines on a scallop shell, and they catch the light in fine, radiating lines, so the glass glows with a rippled texture and not a flat shine. The panels are clear, so you will see the bulbs softened behind the glass, and some light also passes between the tiers. The effect is warm and sparkling and not frosted.

Tell me about the brass crests. Are they solid brass, and how do I care for them?

The crests are mould-cast, which lets them have the fine leaf-and-scroll detail, then welded to the frame and polished. They have a darker, antique-looking finish in the recesses, which shows the detail. Dust them with a soft, dry brush to get into the carving, and wipe the brass with a dry cloth. Avoid abrasive polish and wet cleaners, which can wear the finish unevenly.

Can I dim it?

No. It is controlled by a push button switch and is not dimmable. A dimmer will not work with it. For softer light in the evening, use lower-brightness warm bulbs.

How low will it hang, and can I change the chain?

The chain is 50cm (19.7″), and the length can be changed if you contact us. Over a table, a common guide is to hang the bottom 30″ to 36″ above the tabletop. In a walkway, keep the bottom at least 7 feet above the floor. Add the fixture height and the chain to see how much ceiling you need, or send us your ceiling height and where you want the bottom to sit, and we will confirm the chain.

What bulbs does it take?

The socket is E14, which is slightly wider than the E12 base common in the US, so check the base printed on the box. Both LED and Edison bulbs fit. With clear glass, an Edison bulb shows its filament and adds a warm, decorative glow, and an LED is cooler and kinder to the glass. Ask us for the number of lights in the size you want before you order.

Can I use it in a bathroom? How do I clean the glass?

It is for indoor use only, and no moisture rating is listed, so we recommend dry rooms and not a bathroom. To clean the glass, switch it off and let the bulbs cool, then wipe each panel with a soft, dry microfiber cloth, holding it steady with your other hand. Dust settles in the ribs, so use a soft brush there first.
