A common starting range is 30 to 36 inches above the counter. Adjust for user height, pendant diameter, and sightlines, while ensuring the light reaches the worktop without placing the shade in the way.
Use pendant diameter and island length to set even centre-to-centre spacing, keeping the end fixtures inside the island edges. Test the layout with paper templates before fixing ceiling positions.
Counters need direct, even task light with minimal hand shadow. Pendant and ceiling lights may need support from under-cabinet lighting, especially where wall cabinets block overhead light.
Smooth glass and sealed metal surfaces are generally easier to wipe than open weave or absorbent fabric near cooking areas. Always follow the finish-specific care instructions and keep fixtures clear of excessive heat and grease.
Confirm the fixture location, local electrical zone rules, and any required damp-location or IP rating. Do not assume a decorative indoor pendant is suitable near water unless the product specification states it.
