Cree Lighting Reincarnation Begins Under a Veil of Secrecy

The Asset Sale
Cree Lighting USA's operating assets were sold on May 12, 2026, via an Article 9 UCC foreclosure sale — a secured-party auction conducted outside of bankruptcy court. The buyers were two newly formed Delaware shell LLCs: Beta LED Lighting, LLC and Lumen LED Lighting, LLC, incorporated just days before the auction. Major industry players including Feit Electric participated in the bidding but were outbid by the financial buyers.
In late June, Beta LED announced it had signed a Letter of Intent with an unnamed "strategic lighting partner" to manufacture and sell Cree Lighting products, with production targeting a Q3 2026 start. That announcement was notable for what it did not include: any named parties, any product details, or any timeline commitments.
What Remains Unknown
As of mid-July, Beta LED has disclosed none of the following:
- Who owns the company
- Who the manufacturing partner is
- Where products will be manufactured
- Which product families will return first
- How existing customers, agents, and distributors will transition
- Whether the "Cree Lighting" brand will actually be used on products
Industry speculation points to Sabu Krishnan — who previously operated Cree Lighting USA under ADLT and is affiliated with ADLT and Vantage Lighting — as the likely owner behind Beta LED. Internal communications reference him by name, though no formal confirmation has been made.
The Trademark Conflict
Feit Electric owns the "Cree Lighting" trademark, acquired in 2025. Whether Beta LED can legally sell products under the Cree Lighting name remains an open question. Media reports are divided: some treat the brand transfer as settled, while others note that Feit's trademark ownership and lien position create significant complications. If the trademark cannot be used, Beta LED may need to market products under its own revived brand name instead.
Legal Exposure
The old Cree Lighting entity faces at least six pending lawsuits totaling over $2 million. Beta LED's communications have been notably lawyer-scrubbed — documents show document control numbers in footers — suggesting the new owners are carefully managing legal exposure inherited from the prior operation.
A Brief Ownership Timeline
Cree Lighting began life as Ruud Lighting, founded by Alan Ruud in Wisconsin in 1982. Cree Inc. acquired the business for $525 million in 2011 and rebranded it. IDEAL INDUSTRIES purchased Cree Lighting from Cree Inc. in 2019, then sold it to ADLT in 2023. Following ADLT's financial difficulties, the assets were liquidated at auction in May 2026 — the current uncertain state.
